Its Winter in the Garden

Its Winter in the Garden

Well its that time of year again and things to do in the garden, you will find here a few simple tips to be getting on with but there are so many things you need to get done, quite a task for those of you with a large garden.

The month of October is usually the best time for painting your fence and trellis, get a good sprayer from your local diy shop as if you have a very large fence to paint these sprayers can save you a huge amount of time, hours in fact, a brush just is not good enough for the job anymore when you can use a cheap low cost sprayer, and the time spent could be used somewhere else in your garden.

Dont stop picking your fruit until they no longer ripen.

Make some spiked holes in your lawn and get some sand in there with a brush after you aerate your lawn, this is also about your last chance to give your lawn an autumn feed, dont forget, keep on mowing but raise them blades a little.

Rake up those fallen leaves and put them on the compost heap, cant waste them can we.

If you have roses, keep dead heading them as they can actually flower until Christmas time, amazing I know but these can make your garden look nice, especially if you have enough of them.

Now is also a good time to be planting your shrubs and perennials, roses, trees and conifers and also other types of the spring flowering varieties such as pansies and wallflowers etc and bring in any dahlia tubers but carry on with any shrub cuttings.

It is also a good time for dividing your hardy perennials.

It is a good time now to be planting your spring cabbage but do remember to cover them with a net unless you really want to feed the pigeons, and dont forget about your autumn garlic and onion sets.

You may also want to dig up any potatoes you have left as they wont last long in the winter frost.

Here’s a little tip: Put some grease on any bands you have on your fruit trees, obvious really but too often forgotten.

If you have any tender plants they are not going to last very long if you just leave them out so bring them into the greenhouse.

This is a good time to give the glass in your greehouse a good clean ready for the following spring, that will be the last thing you want to think about.

Lining your greenhouse with bubble polythene will help you to conserve some heat for the winter months.

Make sure your greenhouse heaters are working – no good waiting until you need your heaters only to find they wont work!

Dont do quite so much watering now and only do it during the morning hours, and also remember those odd warm days when you might have to open your ventilators.

Throw out any summer bedding plants when they have finished flowering.

Gardening is really a full time occupation, especially if you have a large garden to look after.

I asked a recently retired friend if he is bored now he has retired and he said he spends so much time doing things in the garden that need doing, he cant believe he ever had time to even go to work.
