Urban Vegetable Gardening and Rats?

LWHenriks asks: Urban Vegetable Gardening and Rats?
I just planted a vegetable garden in the only spot available to me, which unfortunately is a rat hangout. Someone told me that rats don’t tend to bother vegetable gardens, but I find that hard to believe. Any insight into how to combat them? I’m thinking chicken wire, but then again, they’ll probably burrow (?)

Rats live under my garage, and under my neighbor’s shed, and across the street….

I have an extensive vegetable garden….and so far, all they seem to want to get into is the compost heap.

I also hear that they will eat animal waste. Maybe there’s no accounting for taste – and they actually prefer the gross stuff…

  1. rat box that will catch them, dig under ground a bit too if you put chicken wire. For next year I would suggest making a complete deep box that has chicken wire then they cant dig anywhere, but then again i hear of rats that eat threw metal.
LoL feed them away from your flower bed.

  2. Rats will eat anything, so it is best to use something like metal sheeting along the edge up about 10 inches, and to
plant marigolds around the rim of the garden. Another possibility is to put daffodils around the edge of the garden, and crocus. I need to do more research on this, but I think that gophers and rats do not like them. I will get back to you on this one.
