I really think vegetables, etc should be grown in the earth. However I have seen a very large scale hydroponic system, growing lettuce, and every herb, there is, everything looked very healthy, and it was all very controlled. Probably be good if you don’t have the room for a conventional garden

You have the benefit of being able to control almost every aspect of the growing. But the equipment is pricey.
Hydroponics have their place, but it is not practical for most people. The systems are tedious and expensive and the advantages are mostly for die hard environmentalists. I have a lot of catalogs I can order hydroponic equipment, including the liquid fertilize. The only real advantage I see is higher yields as there is no dirt and spacing can be much tighter. * The water stays in the system and can be reused- thus, lower water costs
* It is possible to control the nutrition levels in their entirety- thus, lower nutrition costs
* No nutrition pollution is released into the environment because of the controlled system
* Stable and high yields
* Pests and diseases are easier to get rid of than in soil because of the container’s mobility
Light weight i think for productive roof gardens there is a real benefit in using this system and avoiding the heavy load of conventional growing mediums.
Other benefit would be less chance of root rot wilt type problems.

Very little maintenance
Conservation, less damage to the planet
Uses far less water than conventional soil grown produce
Basically hydroponics is the answer to the world food shortage
any veggies that i have bought that were hydroponicly grown did not have the flavor of homegrown.
Hydroponics are easy to grow for indoor operations, much easier than soil and no longer expensive.
The benefit is you can grow an extra crop or two (depending on what you’re growing) per year because the vegetative and flowering stages are shortened by a couple of weeks due to the nutrient rich water system.
You control the perfect balance of nutrients, the roots get all the oxygen and fresh water they need exactly WHEN they need it throughout the day, and there is no risk of fungus with a properly working system. For those concerned about using nutrients rather than completely natural soil, there is also a branch called “aquaponics,” which uses water from a fish tank or pond to pump into the grow bed. The water is then filtered through the rocks (or whatever growing medium you have) and then returned to the fish water much cleaner. The vegetables make use of the natural fish fertilizer in one awesome ecosystem.
