haggis3point5 asks: Advice on ‘bedding plants’….?
I’m a complete novice to gardening – but I have a tiny patch outside my house that’s so bare – I’d like to give it some colour.
There’s a lady down the road that sells ‘bedding plants’ in trays (£1.20 a tray!) …. so, once I know what to do … I’ll go and get some.
The soil that’s there is quite dark – but seems very dry.
Can you tell me how to prepare the area – how far apart to plant them (or if that’s even important!) – then how to look after them once planted?
Thanks,
Bev

Bedding plants are quite easy to look after (just give them plenty of water when it’s not raining) but they only last a short while then die away. They are used to fill in gaps and give colour in the summer. It might be worth you putting a shrub or two in first to give some all year round foliage and structure then putting the bedding plants around them. Shrubs are also easy to look after as long as you don’t buy really fast growing ones. Just cut them back when they are getting a too big or the wrong shape and water if it doesn’t rain for a few days.
Its getting a bit late in the year now, but you need to give it good dig over to loosen earth and water well. Dont go for anything that will grow really tall as they will overshadow little plants. Plant about four – six inches apart, depending on the size of the plants now. Water well (when its stops raining) and use miracle grow or similar plant food once a week. Marigolds are great, but you will need to take off the dead heads to encourage more flowering
