Cannas, elephant ears and hostas all do well in areas that hold water and get shade.

I’d love to answer your question because I did the same thing around my deck, but you never told us what growing zone your in.
Hi:
There are some good shade plants available today. I am not sure what cliamte zone you live in. The first thing you will need to do is to prep the area. Preparing your soil is critical in the health of the plant specimens. Another important step is to see if you can divert the water from this area. This will also help in getting your plants healthy. You can dig a trench and put a solid corrugated pipe to divert the water away from any low spot or spots. I am a landscaper and designer and have had to do this often with many of my clients.
Many people today are opting for evergreen low maintenance shrubs. There are many available in a vairety of year around color and different textures. Here are some:
Encore Azaleas – they will bloom twice a year
Pieris Japonica – great white Japanese plant that blooms in late winter and early spring.
Depending on your zone – mountain laurels and also good shade plants
Rhododendrons can take shape
You can also add some solid evergreens are some Junipers. (there are many soft low growing varieties)
Mahonia
These are just a few examples. I will link you to the gallery of plants section of my website. There are different shrubs, trees, flowers and herbs with photos, brief descriptions and climate zones. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other article, tip or technique that would be helpful. There is a page I will also link you to that is called plan – prep – plant. This is a great simple method to do for any style garden. There is also a page in the simple solution section on landscaping with corrugated pipes.
Good luck to you and have a great day!
