Gardening For a Greener Future
We are hearing alot about what we can do to help our environment to stop climate change. Gardening is one that does not seem to get mentioned very often, but there are steps that can be taken to help make that difference.
Avoid using chemicals by weeding by hand, chemical pesticides can harm wildlife. Weeding by hand can be therapeutic and a good way of exercising. If you feel the need to use pesticides, then aim to use a biological pesticide (also known as bio pesticide), which are derived from natural materials.
Use water butts – This can stop you wasting water by using the rainwater that is collected in the water butt. Rainwater can be used to water the plants and wont have been chemically treated by your water company, like tap water has.
Use hand tools rather than electric or petrol fueled ones. This will reduce your c0² emissions. The majority of tools now are designed ergonomically with comfort in mind, allowing you to work longer.
Encourage wildlife to your garden – many birds and insects are losing there habitats to make way for new buildings. Help accommodate them by installing a bird table, water feature, and a good range of native plants
Make your own compost by using food waste such as vegetable peel. This not only produces organic feed for plants but also reduces the waste you throw away and cuts down on landfill. All compost can then be stored in a heap in the garden or neatly away in a compost bin.
Grow your own – use your compost to grow your own fruit and vegetables. Growing your own helps reduce the need to import from other countries, again reducing CO2. Not only will you have the satisfaction that you have grown your own tasty fruit and veg but you will have the knowledge where they have come from and are chemical free. If space is an issue then why not use a planter, these can be used indoors and outdoors and come in a variety of sizes and colours.
These may be small changes you can make, but it will make a world of difference in the future.
