What time of year should you plant seeds in England?

asks: What time of year should you plant seeds in England?
I have an acre of land, it is currently nothing but grass and the odd few large trees. I’d like to set up a little garden area, with a variety of beautiful flowers. I don’t know a single thing about gardening nor plants/flowers. All I do know is that I love pastel coloured flowers… Please help and share advice or links to sites offering help.

I’m no expert but depending on what you’re planting you should wait for at least another couple of weeks or so, so that the risk of frost is much less.

  1. I think it would be best if you started planting your crops in the spring, or whenever it’s warm out. Love light and water is all your plants need!
    Cheers.

  2. The cheapest way to get a good start, without the expense of buying plants, is to visit a garden centre and look through the packets of seed to see if there are any that take your fancy. Sowing instructions are always on the packets and there are hundreds of things you could sow outdoors now. Buying a good, general ‘how to’ gardening book would also be useful. A lot of places have started selling summer bedding already but, unless you have a greenhouse to protect them until the frosts have passed, it isn’t worth taking the chance. It might be a good idea to get some professional help in the early stages, to advise on more permanent, perennial planting. Whatever you do, make sure you have fun!
