Garden Sheds and Green Houses Are Prerequisites For The Serious Temperate Zone Gardener!
The garden assumes a special place in the lives of many Americans. It is a place to grow things. We raise plants for many reasons, for food, for medicinal herbs, and sometimes just for the uplifting experience of having been associated with plants.
There are rose gardens, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, fruit trees and berry vines. There is something magical about it all. Growing plants can be very spiritual and fulfilling.
Thomas Jefferson articulated the deep emotions held by human beings regarding gardening when he stated: “I have often thought that if heaven had given me a choice of my position and calling, it should have been on a rich spot of earth, well watered, and near a good market for the productions of the garden. No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden…I am still devoted to the garden. But though and old man, I am but a young gardener”.
The vast majority of sheds are garden sheds. The logic is quite straightforward, gardens require tools and eventually if you obtain an adequate amount of these tools you will need to have a place to keep them.
Furthermore, if you intend to grow plants in the winter then you will need a green house. You might love orchids or tropical plants. If you live in an area which has a brief growing season you might need to grow indoors. Unless you have a green house you might be treated to the spectacle of having all your newly sprouted corn seedlings freeze and die.
So if you would like to take your green thumb to the next level you will need a garden shed and a green house.
Both of these structures can be expensive. Knowing this drives most of us to the local super hardware store to acquire books and plans in an attempt to build them ourselves.
Most often, after a quick perusal, the book and plans find their way onto your bookshelf to be quickly forgotten. This regularly occurs after an attempt is made to burrow through arcane carpentry terminology and plans designed primarily for professionals.
The professional of course probably won’t need the book in the first place and secondly has probably already built his own garden shed and greenhouse.
There will be those daring beginners who forge ahead and attempt to build their own garden sheds and green houses. They will soon find that the path they embarked on is burdened with cost overruns, inappropriate material purchases, measuring foul ups and frustration. You quite simply are not that skilled.
Don’t forget, green houses need painstaking consideration when planning for lighting exposure, placement of shade trees, drainage of water, plumbing, electricity and heating.
Thought needs to be put into your garden shed as well. Do you have a lot of tools? Are you taking into account potential growth of your garden. Are both you and your wife going to utilize the shed? You might need to decide how you are going to divide up the overall space to avoid conflict later.
