How to Start a Home Herb Garden – For Relaxation Purposes
Article by Sean Templeton
This article is about how to start a home herb garden and why an herb garden can be so relaxing. Gardening for relaxation is a great stimulus to the mind and body.
A well maintained garden is a thing of beauty to see, so imagine the sense of pride you have as the garden creator. You can’t fail to feel a sense of the wonder of life by the sights and smells of a garden in full bloom.
Growing an herb garden is a worthy investment of your time, requiring care and attention, but your herb garden also returns these things back to you in the sense of self accomplishment and helps in teaching you the fine art of patience. All it takes is a little imagination coupled with a little bit of physical effort and you’ll soon be sprouting green fingers. Some people garden in the same way they approach the rest of their lives, checking off a list of to-do’s to keep up with the demands of preparing, planting, tending and harvesting your herb garden. But even someone with a type “A” personality can enjoy the relaxation of having an herb garden. Having a home herb garden forces you to learn to relax because you can’t hurry up Mother Nature.
It does take work to maintain an herb garden, but growing herbs requires that you work in harmony with the forces of nature, not against them.Stress is a serious hazard to our health, and is related to a large array of conditions such as mental health, heart disorders and elevated blood pressure. Even if we have not seen any medical research into gardening as stress relief, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that it can be extremely effective in reducing stress levels and helps with psychiatric problems. But, there have been lots of studies into the beneficial effects of exercise on stress, and in this factor alone, gardening can be effective, but it can help in other ways too.
As you can see having an herb garden can provide you with great herbs, but also help you relax. You really don’t need a lot to start an herb garden and all you need are some basic tools and a little know how. But once you get your herb garden going you will find that it is a great stress reliever. A few days ago my wife had one of those bad days and she came home all upset and mad at the world. I told her that after dinner we will go out into the garden and she can vent with the herbs. I think another reason why having an herb garden is so relaxing is because when you plant your seeds and see the fruits (or in this case the herbs) of your labor you have a sense of accomplishment.
It is also rewarding when you have people over for dinner and someone compliments you on the way a meal taste and they ask you what type of spices you use to get that great flavor.Herbs have many benefits such as they give flavor to the food, cure your cold and flu, and also get rid of insects from your home. When you get ready to start your home herb garden remember you can grow all types of herbs. One of the first things you need to do is decide where you will place your herb garden. Keep in mind that you will need a good drainage system for your herb; otherwise you will be taking away the change of planting a healthy plant due to saturation. Dig one foot deep and a layer of crushed rocks must be put in, so that the water can just escape from the area, thus keeping the plant healthy.
Next, you need to select the kind of herb that you want to plant. You can make this by essentially examining what you use the most in your kitchen. By doing this, you can have your own fresh herbs and can also save money. As you can see starting a home herb garden not only has herb benefits, but it can help you relax as well.
