New 2012 Exhibits at Atlanta Botanical Garden

Article by Ajay Sethi

Even though winter’s chill is still in the air, some special exhibits at the Atlanta Botanical Garden will have visitors thinking of spring. There is plenty going on in the garden over the next few weeks to chase away the winter doldrums. Visitors can enjoy a dramatic orchid exhibit and a dazzling display of spring color.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden will present the Orchid Days Exhibition from February 4 through April 15. The highlight of the exhibit is the dramatic hanging garden of orchids in the Fuqua Orchid Center. Colorful displays of exotic moth orchids, slipper orchids, and pansy orchids are spectacular to see. The hanging garden makes a stunning sight in the cold days before spring. Upcoming Orchid Market Weekends are scheduled for March 3-4 and April 7-8. Local orchid growers will bring a selection of gorgeous orchid plants and will be available to answer questions and give expert advice. The Atlanta Orchid Society will hold its Orchid Society Show at the garden on the weekend of March 9-11. Hundreds of beautiful orchids will be on display and available for purchase. Visitors can take special guided Orchid Exhibition tours on Saturdays at 10am. Guided garden tours are given every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30pm. The tours are included in the regular garden admission price.

The Atlanta Blooms Exhibition is scheduled for March and April. The North Courtyard will explode with color as more than 300,000 spring bulbs provide a spectacular display. Visitors will see tulips, daffodils, crocus, and hyacinth in shades of pink, red, lavender, yellow, orange, and blue. Last year’s inaugural Atlanta Blooms was one of the most popular exhibits in the garden. This year the spring show promises to be even better, with an additional 100,000 bulbs to view.

During Atlanta Blooms the Botanical Garden will also present a collection of unique iron garden gates designed by Atlanta metal artist Andrew Crawford. Two of Crawford’s gates are permanently displayed in the garden. The tool gate is at the entrance to a small walled garden, and the former entrance gates are now displayed in the Cascades Garden. Sizes of the new collection of gates will range from small gates to impressively large examples. Some of the gates have garden motifs such as flowers, vegetables, and birds. Others have more abstract forms. While some gates will be placed along pathways in the garden, most will be displayed as art objects among the plants. On March 17 and April 14 the artist will lead special exhibition tours.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located at 1345 Piedmont Avenue in midtown Atlanta. The garden is open Tuesday-Sunday. Hours in February and March are 9am-5pm. In April the garden is open from 9am-7pm. Admission is $ 18.95 for adults and $ 12.95 for children ages 3-12.
