Successful Gardening – Essentials for Getting Started
Article by Trevor Price
Gardening has become quite the popular pastime for many Americans who love growing food and other plants while gaining some mental rejuvenation. In generations past, gardening and farming were done as a means of growing food for life sustenance, but today more people garden as a form of enjoyment and fun. (Which of us grown “kids” doesn’t have fun playing in the dirt?)More recently, gardening has become a much more leisurely activity because the work itself isn’t as difficult. With the right tools and knowledge, gardening of any sort is not all that difficult. The Most Basic Supply: Plants or SeedsAll types of gardening require the use of particular tools and supplies. You won’t get far creating and maintaining a garden without them. Obviously, the most important items you need to develop your garden are the seeds or plants. This is true for both flower and vegetable gardens. Many others are critical as well (e.g. good soil, sunshine, rain, mulch, etc.), but a garden without plants or flowers would merely be a bed of soil and weeds. If you are growing your plants from seeds, it is particularly important to use plant food to supplement the nutrients for their overall health and growth.Creating Your GardenYou need to determine where your garden is going to be positioned in your yard before you begin to purchase anything. Knowing that helps you figure out know how much sunlight and rainfall your garden will get based on where it is in your yard.Additionally, your garden’s intended size will provide you a good idea of the quantity of supplies and plants you’ll need to buy.Decide What Type of Garden You WantCertainly you need to be specific about the kind of garden you will be planting. Some of the supplies you would need to grow a garden full of vegetables differ from those needed for growing flowers, though fundamental supplies will be similar.Essential ToolsAll gardeners need to have basic tools to create and maintain a great garden. These include shovels, hoes, rakes, spades, and other basic gardening implements.Finding these tools is very easy at virtually every home improvement store.
