Have you been thinking about planting a garden of your own but don’t know where to start? Have you ever brought home a flower from the store and thought “I wish I could grow a bunch of these”? How often do you buy fruits and vegetables and think to yourself “I should grow my own produce because it will taste better and save me money”? How often do you think about growing your own herb garden to save money? Have you ever looked at your house or apartment and thought “but where the heck would I put this garden?” The great news is that you can plant your garden just about where ever you want even if you want to plant it inside. Here are some tips to help you begin.

There are only a few times during the year that planting can be done. There are some plants that thrive more if you plant them a few months before their optimal blooming time. This is partially due to the time needed for a seed to grow into a blooming plant. It is also because the best time to get the seed into the ground is when it is thawed. Some plants will be more plentiful if planted a few seasons prior to their bloom time. If you want to grow specific plants in your garden, make sure you learn when the optimal planting time is.

Loosen up your soil by digging into the ground. Of course if you dig when the conditions are wrong you could do more harm than good.

Don’t dig unless you have moist soil conditions. If you can form the soil into a ball with your hands (after digging it up) the conditions are right. If the ground is too moist the ball won’t break when you drop it. Your best tool for this job is a spade or a spading fork that you can use to turn the soil and get the air moving through it.

Before you plant anything prepare your garden’s ground. Whether or not you want to believe this, you won’t have any luck with your garden if all you do is put some seeds into the ground and hope they grow. Work the soil in your garden before you start planting your seedlings. Clear away rocks and debris. Till the soil so that there is oxygen moving through it. If you plan on doing any container gardening (or building an indoor garden) prepare your seedling pots and get your containers ready to hold soil and water weight.

Starting your own garden can be really exciting! You probably are already daydreaming about the finished garden plot. Of course, before you can get to your dreams, you need to put in some work. You’ll have to be careful and do specific things to ensure that your garden will grow. When you do your own prep work, keep up with gardening trends, follow expert garden tips and pay attention you will be able to make sure that the garden you get matches the garden in your mind.
