AlanIAM asks: Is it harmful to soil if an organic garden is covered in tarp in the winter?
Need to keep my two dogs out of the organic 16’x16′ garden just built. For the winter I plan to cover it in a plastic tarp. Wondering if doing so might cause some of the plastic to “leach” into the soil. I live in the Colorado mountains and for much of the winter I expect snow to be covering the tarp, but at other times not. Appreciate any advice as I’d like to avoid ruining or harming the soil.

I’ve never heard of plastic leaching into the soil, if you’re using regular sheet polyethylene. We use EPDM fish safe liner in our ponds and water recycling gardens. I’d imaging if fish are happy with it, your soil ought to be.
Some folks take organic gardening to different levels – kind of like religion. What works for your neighbor may be heresy to you, since there are no real standards for organic, except it has to contain carbon.
