What exactly is an organic garden?

jane d asks: What exactly is an organic garden?
I have a small garden in my back yard. I have a compost pile that I use in the garden. I don’t use chemicals mostly because I don’t have much of a pest problem and the pests I do have are easily controlled without it. So does that make organic or is there something more?

An organic garden means different things to different people. Mainly, an organic garden means growing plants without the use of synthetic fertilizers or non organic chemicals. If you only use compost or fertilizers such as fish meal, kelp meal, cottonseed meal etc and no chemicals, I would say you are growing organic plants. Other people may have different requirements such as how long has it been since the soil was farmed inorganically etc. Does it really matter what others think? Grow your plants in a manner that pleases you.

  1. Organic means it’s not treated with anything or exposed to any chemicals. So, although you may be using organic soil and composting only organic material, if your garden is located next to an asphalt driveway or a pressure treated wood fence, your vegetables will contain trace amounts of tar and chemicals that leech into the soil. Also, many garden hoses contain lead, so many people who think they are growing organic, are actually spraying lead onto their food.

I replaced all the soil 4 feet down in my garden with organic triple mix and have never use any pesticides or anything. I have an all natural, unstained cedar fence. However, I do have an asphalt driveway and probably some runoff from the roof of my house. Although my garden may not be certifiably organic, I still consider my garden vegetables superior to typical vegetables you find in a store because they are vine ripened and exposed to less toxins. And they taste 100% better.
