I need ideas to make the flower bed in my yard in NJ USA. It is about 12’x3′. I Don’t know almost anything about gardening. Some good advice and guidance please!

I would first want to know if you have shade, sun or a combination of both. Go to the local nursery (not H.D.) for some good advice. I think you should have a mix of perennials (they come back every year) and annuals(zinnias, cosmos, dahlias etc.). Put in a few sunflower seeds in the spring and you will have six-footers by the end of July! In the Fall (now) plant some tulip and daffodil bulbs. They are great to cut and bring inside in the Spring. Some kitchen herbs (basil, parsley, sage etc.) can also make it a more interesting and useful garden. Have fun and don’t let the weeds take over!

  1. I agree with the previous answer that more information is needed. But daylilies a a good all purpose plant. There a many varieties that would bloom all summer long and they will tolerate full sun to shade. They will grow together to create a ground cover effect that will block out the weeds and be low maintenance.
