Miniature gardening originated in Japan because most Japanese people do not have enough room for a large garden. Miniature gardens are supposed to look natural and larger than they are. Three important fundamentals to remember when growing a miniature garden are what the garden’s purpose is, how to make the garden look larger than it is, and the importance of water. If you keep these three miniature gardening fundamentals you will be well on your way to a beautiful Japanese garden.
Miniature gardens are supposed to have a purpose. When working on your miniature garden it’s important to figure out what story or statement you are trying to make. The purpose is not for it to look beautiful but to be simple and tell a story. Rocks and gravel are used as symbolism to tell a story. Another important aspect to remember while miniature gardening is learning the art of making the garden look larger than it is.
Making a miniature garden requires making the garden look larger than it is. A simple example of this is that if a plant is usually large you can buy the smallest one you can find and put it in the back. But, it can be more elaborate than that by placing rocks in such a way that they look like a sloping mountain. Miniature gardening should be built around the focal point. As you may have noticed by watching other Japanese gardens is that they are not overcrowded. When miniature gardening keep it simple. Ah water, in my opinion this is the best part about miniature gardening.
Water is the best part about miniature gardening. Your Japanese garden is really not complete without it. In the Japanese culture water flowing represents time passing. See the symbolism, Westerners like me just do not see things the same way. So, in a way water puts the story of your miniature garden into action.
Miniature gardens can be your little bit of paradise even if you don’t have much room in your backyard. Obviously I did not cover everything there is to cover about miniature gardening. There are many more things to learn about making your garden look more vast and building around your focal point. Read some books on Japanese small gardening and your garden will be on it’s way to telling others it’s story in no time.
