Article by Michelle Lee
Teaching your kids how to grow their own vegetable garden is not only educational, it is fun. Children will thoroughly enjoy the experience of growing plants and learning all about what they need to do to in order to create their own food. Growing a garden is a very rewarding experience for anyone. When you put a bit of work into a garden, you will get an awesome return. This is a great lesson to teach young minds. They will learn how to grow their own food, which is a major necessity in life. There are several different ways to get your children involved in gardening. If you live in an urban area, you may not have a lot of space to work with. However, you do not have to own a large plot of land to grow a vegetable garden. As a matter of fact, you can even plant a few plants in window planter boxes. A few tomato plants can yield several tomatoes if they are properly nurtured. You could even use patio benches to hold several flower pots and place a particular plant in each pot. It really does not matter at all how you incorporate gardening into a child’s life, they are sure to enjoy the whole concept. Furthermore, your children will learn how to plant and nurture their crops until they are ready to be harvested and consumed. This is a lesson that they will be able to use throughout their lives. If you are lucky enough to have a large garden area to work with, there are several things that you can do. You can grow an entire garden and allow the kids to help you every step of the way. You could also assign each child their own area to work with. This is great if you have two or three children. Each child will have their own vegetable garden. You can even make it a friendly competition to see who can harvest the most vegetables from their garden. Of course, this will mainly rely on how well the garden is nurtured. Therefore, the child that takes the best care of their garden will be the winner. In order to make this an even more enjoyable teaching experience, you could place several garden benches in your garden and allow the children to observe and track their progress in a journal. Teach them about the different stages that the garden goes through. Teach them to observe the different insects that are involved in the process. They can learn to grow a garden and several other natural elements of the gardening experience. Children are like little sponges and will quickly absorb all of the information that you teach them. Vegetable gardening is a skill that can provide them with the ability to provide food for themselves and their families in the future. Furthermore, they will always remember their own gardening experience and how much fun they had in the process. Just imagine the satisfaction that will come from you teaching your children something that they will have so much fun doing.
