Owning a Garden Compost Bin is a Great Investment for the Future

Article by Darren Pace

A garden compost bin has become one of those essential must have items for the garden, and more and more people are beginning to own them. There are many different styles, sizes, and shapes of garden composter to choose from. Although real garden enthusiasts will make their own, they can be easily bought and placed in a very short space of time. Although people like the concept of composting they do not want to draw attention to the compost bin.

Having a garden decomposition bin will benefit both the environment, and the homeowner’s garden. Far too much rubbish and waste is thrown away every year, and landfill sites are becoming a massive problem. By removing a proportion of the waste that reaches these landfill sites, the homeowner is doing something to help against the problem. Although not everything can be thrown into the garden composter it is surprising how much waste can be.

Research is essential before rushing out to purchase the garden decomposition bin, and location is very important. Although the compost bin will become part of the garden, it should not dominate the space. It also needs to be close enough to the house to encourage people to carry the food waste to the garden composter. Once the location has been decided the size and style need to be considered. There are three main components to compost, which are water, air, and daylight.

Many people are choosing tumblers to ensure that the air flow is achieved throughout the compost. By turning the compost regularly the air flow is increased, and the compost will be produced far quicker. Not only can kitchen waste be added to the garden compost bin, but also garden waste and paper. There will need to be a dry element added to the compost to ensure that it does not become too damp. Paper and straw are ideal, and can ensure that the compost does not begin to smell as this would be very bad.

Once the garden compost bin is in place it should be filled, however, not to the top, or the contents will not be able to breathe. After the initial set up the garden composter takes very little maintenance, and will begin to compost beautifully. The contents of the composter can be used everywhere in the garden. Plants, vegetables, and flowers will thrive from the many nutrients found in the compost. It is amazing that kitchen waste, and garden rubbish, can be turned into something incredible for the garden.

Although there are numerous things that can be placed into the garden compost bin there are some items that are bad. Bones, meat, and certain dairy products cannot decompose, and will end up smelling. Diseased plants from the garden should also never be added as these can continue to infect the new plants if added in compost. If the correct items are added to the garden compost bin it will produce excellent compost.

With more people thinking of great ways to help the environment, hopefully the planet will slowly begin to improve, and recover from all of the damage everyone has inflicted on it. Although owning a garden compost bin is only the tip of the iceberg it is a start, and if everyone did something it would all add up.
