Streets of Singapore – Pandan Gardens
Pandan Gardens is a small town in the western part of Singapore with an estimated population of about 19,000. It is mainly made up of public housing estates built by the Housing Developmental Board (HDB). Its road leads to a nearby West Coast Housing Estate and its nearest neighboring town, Teban Gardens. Unlike, Teban Gardens which is seen as a bustling town and full of life, Pandan Gardens is significantly quiet, with lesser activities during the day.
Pandan Gardens has a few shophouses of its own, however it lacks a wet market like the one situated in Teban Gardens. Residents would more often than not travel to the neighboring town to get its food supplies and groceries. Pandan Gardens however has a swimming pool facility and a community centre, Ayer Rajah Community Centre, a place where residents congregate and does activities such as exercise and learn from the various courses offered. The Ayer Rajah Community Centre is the favorite chill out place for its residents, especially with the senior citizens.
There is formerly a top ranking school, River Valley High School, located within the town but the said school has since been relocated to Alexandra road back in 2006. A new school, Commonwealth Secondary School, has been built and started operating in the beginning of 2007.
Pandan reservoir runs along the town. With a 6.4km jogging track for the fitness junkies and park benches for families to sit and enjoy the breeze, its easy to imagine how residents of this town would spend the rest of the day after a hard day’s work.
