  1. Take the time to water your plants by hand. I’m talking out in the yard. You’ll be forcing yourself to lower your blood pressure by doing it, also, by being out there every day you can keep tabs on your plants. Water vigorously….it strengthens the plant and also washes bugs off. Bugs are lazy creatures….if you keep knocking them off of your plants, they’ll stop and go next door and eat their plants. (no joke there) If you have good drainage, and live in an arid climate, water a lot. (yes, i see the first answer and that is a great answer for indoor plants and outdoor plants with bad drainage) And try to stick with one type of plant. Not one species, but one type….an example would be….have a cactus garden, or a garden with tropicals….do not try to have both.

  2. The best way to be good at gardening is to love gardening, and practice, be sensitive and aware of your little plant guys, and take all the advice you are given, sift through it and find what works best for you!

Spend time every day with your plants. Be aware of their growth, their problems, and enjoy their happy silence.

  3. Maintain your garden. I see lots of gardens with potential, but seems like most people think all you do is get a garden planted and that is it. Most plants need to be dead-headed to continue blooming. It may take a little time but its worth it. Weeding goes a long way in making a garden look good. Those guys grow fast and its easier to just pull them up as soon as you see them. Gardens are outside rooms and need to be picked up and cleaned up just like an inside room. Why bother having a garden or landscaping if you aren’t going to keep it looking good?

  4. For any garden (veggie/flower) my grandmother gave me some great advice: “You have to be in your garden every day!” It’s true, you have to be in there checking for bugs in, on, and under your plants, checking for dehydration vs. overwatering, checking for disease, weeds (though some are good like catnip, it keeps some bad bugs away)
Also, be careful what you weed, do research and find out if you have beneficial weeds, as long as they’re not too close to your plants you can leave them, some beneficial ground beetles that do eat bad bugs enjoy the cover of a few weeds)
Partner planting works, research it. If it’s a veggie garden pick early to stimulate new growth.
In any case you have to inform yourself and care for and about your garden, you didn’t spend the money and time to have it fail!
