Herb Gardens For Beginners – What to Grow?

It’s my guess that if you are interested in growing herb plants, you probably have an idea of one or two herbs that you want to grow. That’s a great way to start. Pick a couple of your favorites, learn a little about them, and have at it!

However, if you are a little more ambitious you may want to start with your favorites and add a few you know a little less about. That’s a great way to learn about new herbs sooner, and see how different ones respond.

The best way to pick the right herbs for you is to think a little bit about what you want to do with them once they grow. Of course, you don’t have to do anything with them. The miracle of their growth is reward enough for the effort involved, but I bet you would like the added benefit of a usable product once they’ve grown.

Maybe you are starting to grow herbs in order to have them to use in your favorite recipes. So why not pick your favorites and add an herb you don’t know much about to brew in tea or to use as an insect repellent?

Or, maybe you are growing herbs for potpourri and want to try an unfamiliar one for a new cuisine you’ve always wanted to try. Lemongrass is a great herb if you’re getting interested in Asian cuisine. Whatever, I think it’s exciting to try at lest one herb I don’t know much about each time I replant.

As you’ve probably gathered from what I’ve written so far, there are very few hard and fast rules. In fact, water, sun and food are about the only ones I know! You might want to start out with a basic kit with three or four common herbs and go from there. Or, you might just add a few herbs in with your vegetable garden and go from there. Did you know that basil grown in with tomato plants often produce basil flavored tomatoes?

Maybe you just want to plant a few rosemary bushes at the exit of your garden so you will always bring a little freshness into your home from where the Rosemary brushed against your clothes.

This was quite a common practice in Victorian times.

However you choose to begin, a small herb garden can teach you a lot, and probably get you hooked. Just pick a few herbs, learn what they especially like and get started!
